Redland College opens in Elmore County

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – It’s been a busy and exciting week for schools in Elmore County as the district welcomed back students and opened a brand new middle school. Redland Middle School serves students in grades five through eight.

“We have 555 students as of yesterday afternoon,” said Chad Walls, principal of Redland Middle School.

Walls says everyone was on deck to make sure they were ready to open Monday for the first day.

“Everyone involved did a great job. We were able to open it. Day one went really well,” Walls said. “There was a lot of excitement for the kids to walk around the building and see everything,” he said.

In the state-of-the-art learning space, you’ll find interactive TVs in every classroom. Linguistic arts teacher Sherrie Boone says the new technology gives them additional tools to stay sharp.

“It enhances what we are able to teach them and how we can get them to understand it,” Boone said.

Four STEM rooms also enhance the school experience. Walls believes this allows them to be a leader in 21st century learning.

“Our job is to teach them how to use objects, how to work together and how to work in the real world. So the fact that we have the best technology in this building really helps us achieve that,” Walls said. “Honestly, everything about the building is absolutely wonderful.

And they also know that the key to forming well-rounded students is making sure they incorporate breaks. This is why the school includes a spacious gymnasium and a huge courtyard where students can relax.

“We have changed our schedule a bit this year, where the children have a little more time to relax from the daily grind of school. And it gives them a great place and a great space to do that,” Walls said.

Redland Middle has a partnership with Sweet Home Books in Wetumpka. You can buy books or gift cards to donate so they can fill the new shelves.

There will be a ribbon cutting on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
