NVIDIA has announced a massive initiative to evolve Universal Scene Description (USD) to become the foundation for the open metaverse and the 3D Internet. NVIDIA revealed the initiative during its special SIGGRAPH keynote when it shared the upcoming updates to scale the USD.

NVIDIA will work with USD inventor Pixar, as well as Adobe, Autodesk, Siemens and others, to pursue a multi-year roadmap expanding USD’s capabilities beyond visual effects and to better support industrial metaverse applications in architecture, engineering, manufacturing, science, computer science, robotics and industrial digital twins.

Updates include support for international characters to allow users from all countries and languages to participate in the USD, geospatial coordinates to enable citywide and nationwide digital twins. scale, and the real-time dissemination of IoT data. The updates will allow the development of digital twins synchronized with the physical world.

To accelerate the development and adoption of USD, NVIDIA also announced the development of an open USD compatibility testing and certification suite to allow developers to freely test their USD builds and certify expected results.

Rev Lebaredian, Vice President of Omniverse and Simulation Technology at NVIDIA, explained:

“Beyond media and entertainment, USD will give 3D artists, designers, developers and others the ability to work collaboratively on various workflows and applications while creating virtual worlds. Together with our community of partners, we are investing in the USD so that it can serve as the basis for architecture, manufacturing, robotics, engineering and many other fields. »

Open Source USD Resources

NVIDIA releases a collection of free resources to accelerate USD adoption that includes thousands of USD assets specifically designed to open up virtual world building to users who lack 3D expertise. Resources include simulation-ready USD resources designed for use in industrial digital twins and AI training workflows. The company also offers hundreds of on-demand tutorials, documentation, instructor-led courses, and development tools to help spread education at USD.

Pixar Chief Technology Officer Steve May added:

“USD is a cornerstone of Pixar’s pipeline, and it is growing rapidly as an open source framework not only for visual effects and animation, but now for industrial, design and scientific applications. NVIDIA’s contributions to help evolve USD as the open foundation of fully interoperable 3D platforms will be of great benefit to all industries.

NVIDIA Omniverse plugins

NVIDIA invests in creating USD plug-ins from popular 3D software ecosystems to NVIDIA Omniverse, a platform for connecting and creating USD-based virtual worlds. New betas include PTC Creo and SideFX Houdini, with Autodesk Alias and Autodesk Civil3D, Siemens Xcelerator, and many more in development.

NVIDIA is leveraging SIGGRAPH to bring together hundreds of engineering and product managers across the USD ecosystem by creating working committees to align with USD development priorities and gather feedback on where NVIDIA can centralize development efforts.

Media, gaming, robotics, industrial automation, retail and grocery innovators are adopting USD as their metaverse language of choice, including Kroger and Volvo Cars.
