Dr. John Chowning, Executive Assistant to the President for Government, Community, and Constituent Relations at Campbellsville University, is the recipient of the 2022 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Award from Kentucky Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. State Commission.

The commission presents the Leadership Award to individuals who embody King’s life and work and who have made exemplary contributions to his legacy of service.

“During my career in church, higher education and civic engagement, I have felt a call to ministry to build bridges across race, ethnicity, language, gender and economic status. and to help break down the walls and barriers that have separated the human race for too long,” Chowning said in a statement released Thursday by the university.

Chowning became involved in fundraising with Campbellsville University in 1989 and became a member of the university’s board of trustees in 1992. He continued to serve on the board for seven years, serving as president in 1996 and 1997. He became a full-time UC employee in February. 1998.

“This award reminds me that we must continue to work on Dr. King’s mission as he worked for justice, empowerment and educational opportunity for all. We must continue this work in 2022 and beyond,” said Chowning said “It’s a day-to-day business, and we have to persevere in our efforts to achieve these goals.”

Chowning taught as an assistant instructor for several years in the university’s political science department and chaired the university’s diversity committee, strategic planning, and academic council.

Chowning has been involved in many initiatives at the university, including racial reconciliation and establishing Dialogue on Race, a project close to his heart. He was one of the leaders of Greater Campbellsville United, whose goal is to create an environment of equality and opportunity for all residents of Campbellsville-Taylor County and the Central Kentucky region.

He has been senior pastor at Saloma Baptist Church since 1994. He is married to Cathy Pence Chowning and they have four children and four grandchildren.
